Site based on the CTRL 230 project at Stratford, contract value £ 30m, diaphragm wall. Technical support on Bentonite desanding plant. Developed use of polymer to reduce cost on disposal of bentonite. Polymer support fluid as alternative to Bentonite. Leak sealing of joints on the wall, Geotextile for de-watering of bentonite mud.

1989 - 1998  SENIOR DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER / PROJECT MANAGER – Materials Technology Kvaerner Technology Ltd (R&D Division), Rickmansworth.

Responsibilities     · Leading teams responsible for research and development of materials used in the
Construction industry (cements, aggregates, plaster, building adhesives, tile grouts, concrete, mortar, screeds, admixtures)

Providing technical advice and support to internal and external clients Conducting tests (strength, shrinkage, water absorption, durability, adhesion, setting, flow) on a range of materials (such as cements, plaster, chemical grouts, blended materials)

Managing large-scale development projects including supervising laboratory work and field trials 

Liaising extensively with materials suppliers / manufacturers (Fosroc, Feb-MBT, Castle, Blue Circle, RMC, Lafarge, Grace etc)

Developing links with academic and government institutions

Major Projects Project managed 2 million ECU BRITE-EURAM on Systems of Waterproofing for Existing masonry lined Tunnels (joint venture LNEC, Portugal; MC Chemicals, Germany; Scientifics, UK); supervised laboratory and field trials; supervised technical (2-3) and other staff (5 or more on site); liaised with clients / partners; prepared and presented project reports

Developed backwall grouting for Kvaerner Cementation for SSDS18 project in Hong

Kong. Carrying out formulation on materials from HongKong and comparing with UK materials and recommending formulation for use on site

1988 - 1989   RESEARCH SCIENTIST – Dept. of Civil Engineering Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London, London

Managed research on the significance of early thermal history of offshore grouts on microstructural and other properties, a joint research programme between Queen Mary & Westfield College, Imperial College and King’s College

Conducted research on the development of a grout test facility to assess offshore grout formulations, prediction of full scale pumping pressures for cement based grouts, and assessment of the true permeability of concrete

Managed research on polymer modified cement (funded by The Marine Technology Directorate of SERC and North West Consortium for Marine Technology)
